The carrying out of our 51 activities

Our activities in Second Life began with a joint press conference with us and Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan inside Second Life. The press conference took place on the 24th of May and is as far as we know the first Swedish press conference in Second Life. Approximately 25 persons attended the event. A handful of those were interested journalists, the majority were other curious persons interested in our project. We produced a movie about the event for internal use at Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan.

After the press conference we started to plan all activities that were to be held in the Swedish Resource Centre.Early in the process, on the 26th of May, we held a meeting where all interested people could come up with ideas about the content on our island. This meeting gathered 23 persons. Lots of ideas came up during the meeting and were later also put into our program.

As we opened up our island to visitors we had already begun gathering members to the Swedish Resource Centre. In the beginning, the recruitment of new members was a rather slow process; we had to put extra effort into this. It is essential to have members to be able to reach out with information about what is happening on the island. After some time the number of members started to grow, more and more people joined the Swedish Resource Centre.

The project evolved and we started to carry out one activity after the other. In the beginning we did everything for the first time, but for every activity that was carried trough we gained more and more routine. It turned out to be easy to organize events in a way that the participant or the audience very much appreciated.

We used the activities to evaluate what in our concept worked and why some things didn’t. We tried different topics, leaders, forms of media, different places on the island, various ways of spreading information and distributing our program.

During the 24th of May to the 12th of July 2007 we organized 51 different meetings, discussions, concerts, talks etc. We documented them all by taking screen shots, noting who the participants were and saving the chat log. In the beginning this was an easy job, but as the number of activities increased this became more and more time consuming. We constantly had more ideas and saw more possibilities. The demand for our activities grew rapidly. To keep everything running smoothly the people who coordinated the activities on our island had to work several hours each day, especially during evenings and in the night since this was the time when most visitors were active. When the Swedish summer vacation started for real we decided to stop our activities, take some time off and then begin the evaluation and analysis of the entire first step of the project.

This is the list of the activities we organized. In Sweden dates are written YYMMDD.
